Artists like State Of Mind, The Upbeats, Concord Dawn, Dose, Agent Alvin and Trei are hot names in Drum and Bass production circles and amongst the many fans of this music.
One of the original labels to nurture and encourage local talent was Subtronix Recordings. Exclusively A&R'd by DJ Presha (Geoff Wright) Subtronix Recordings enjoyed many successful releases from the likes of The Upbeats, Mosus, Bulletproof and international guests Mathematics, Baron, DJ Craze and Bailey.
Presha has been a long-time supporter of local producer / DJ talent through regular promoting, DJing, radio shows and his many global contacts in the drum and bass industry. Of particular note was his role in the artist development and management of local and international stars, State Of Mind.
Samurai Distribution (previously Subtronix Distribution) have been New Zealand’s premier drum & bass music suppliers for over a decade now; Samurai Music will now take on the operating duties of both label and distribution company.
Why start a label?
1/ New Zealand does not have a global label of its own that serves as a benchmark for local producers to aspire to.
2/ Samurai Music is not run by a producer, so will not serve as any one artists home base, but rather a home for any high quality local product.
Aesthetically and musically Samurai Music aspires to release high quality music, with initial runs available in limited and unique formats.
Samurai Music will feature occasional international guest releases; the main criteria being quality music from those with a close affinity to the New Zealand scene or vibe. The first of these international releases will be from New Zealand favourite, Tom Withers aka Klute.
Samurai Music is always interested to hear from producers and local graphic designers interested in being part of this new label.
